Proper time management and scheduling are tools for success

Stepping back into school mode is never easy, especially as an “older” adult. Struggles with balancing work, school, and personal life can be challenging. The content this week gave me good insight into ways to be better at owning my education and efficiently using my time. When the book “Owning your education” by Megan Stone was referring to students stating how we do not have time that’s why we get bad grades I saw myself in that statement from time to time. I’ve been the type to procrastinate and to think that I work best under a time constraint.

Time management has always been a big factor as to why I fall into procrastination at some moments. The book states executing good time management involves “Accurate estimating the time needed to accomplish tasks, scheduling sufficient time to complete tasks, calendaring ample “buffer” time for emergencies…, scheduling time for daily activities… and monitoring the schedule to ensure task completion” (Stone, M. 2014). I’ve always struggled with it and I want to take time to utilize this skill. Another great strategy to ensure we can have a good balance is shared by Alphie from one of the YouTube videos we watched which outlines how to find balance. He stated we must, “know our limits, break up the day, block-out time and pace yourself” (Yip, A., 2020) to name a few. I liked the idea of creating a schedule and setting up my day and goals for the day. He also stated that we should not just spend our time studying all the time, we also need to have our “extra-curricular” time. I still struggle with work and making sure I have enough time to fit in time where I can unwind and not worry about school or work, so these skills will come in handy.

  3. Hi Chan!

For me, although adding more to my plate has been a lot harder, it's also been nicer that I know I am more disciplined. I am more organized and luckily have my life more put together than when I was younger. I prioritize what's important to me and what I know has to get done for me to succeed in the long run.
